Voice of Navkshitij: February 2015
From The President’s Desk
Spreading our wings atBharatpur:
For thisyear’s annual holiday, we decided to go to the bird sanctuary at Bharatpur inRajasthan. Our Friends have had eight outings in the Himalayan region, oneholiday abroad and a trip to a tiger reserve. Hence, we thought an exposure tothe haven of birds would be a good option.
Preparationsbegan three months earlier. We decided to leave on February 7 and return onFebruary 13. Having finalised the venue and dates, we informed the person whousually books our train tickets. One day prior to our departure, he said thathe could not organize the train tickets and that we should take a flight. Hesprung this unpleasant surprise on us in spite of being constantly in touchwith us and assuring us that the tickets would be delivered to us!
That wasa blow. Going by flight was not an option at all. We were a group of 46, with28 Friends, both from Navkshitij and outside. I had to cancel the trip or find a way out. Cancelling the trip was, ofcourse, an easy option. But our Friends would be awfully disappointed. Idefinitely did not want that. So I decided that we could go by bus. I voiced mythought to Mr. Manoj Bhagwat, a member of our Adventure Club, and our adminmanager, Mr. Wayal. Mr. Bhagwat arranged for a bus while Wayal Sir asked ourvolunteers to report to Marunji on the scheduled date of departure.
We leftMarunji on February 7, at 8.30 p.m. and reached Bharatpur on February 9, at4.30 p.m. It was a long journey. You will be amazed to learn that our Friendsimmensely enjoyed the road travel. We had frequent halts. We played antakshari in the bus. We ate hot, freshdelicious meals at roadside dhabbasand restaurants. At every dhabba/restaurant, along with the foodthey served us so much love and warmth. For instance, on the night of February8, we stopped at a dhabba at around10.30 p.m. for dinner. We decided to give the driver a few hours of rest. Afterdinner, the owner set up a camp fire for us to sit around and served us chai beforewe took leave.
Wevisited the Keoladeo National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (as it is betterknown) on February 10. We went in cycle rickshaws. We also went on a shorttrail inside the national park. We saw a mind boggling variety of birds – owl, parakeet, peacock, kingfisher, teal, tufted duck, comb duck, white spoonbill,Chinese duck, Oriental ibis, sandpiper, Rufous treepie (also known as Tiger’s toothpick)and many more. There were many migratory birds from Russia, Europe, CentralAsia, northern and western China, Ladakh and Kashmir. We also saw othercreatures such as the Great Indian Python, jackal, fox, deer, turtle, andunicorn.
OnFebruary 11, at 9 a.m., we left Bharatpur to see the Taj Mahal in Agra. The Tajwas a feast to the eyes. Around 12.30p.m., the same day, we began the return journey to Pune. We reached Marunji onFebruary 13, at 12.30 p.m., where we got a very warm welcome. It was avery memorable trip with many hurdles. Despite the problems, every member ofthe group enjoyed the trip, especially our Friends. They adapted to the changedsituation so courageously. This trip is a classic example of how we canovercome obstacles and difficulties by staying together.
I take this opportunity to thank parents who expressed their trust in usby letting the wards come with us. As always, Adventure Club members Mr. ManojBhagwat and Mr. Rajabhau Patankar won us over with their dedication andcommitment, as did the staff.
Two Annual events in February:
Therewere two major events in the month of February. Weorganized our 7th Parvati climbing competition for special friendson February 4. One hundred and fifty students from 12 schools participated inthis event. This year’s event was sponsored by Nitor Infotech. Mr. AnandPalande, one of the founder members of Giripremi, a mountaineering club, wasthe chief guest. Volunteers from Nitor, Zhep, Indira College of Management,IIEBM, and The Pune Mountaineers helped us to make this event a great success.Dr. Rajkumar Shah from the Indian Medical Association volunteered to attend to anymedical emergencies that may arise. Mr. Bipin Sangle compered the event and Mr.Prasanna Gokhale helped us during the event. We are grateful to each of thesewonderful people.
We heldour 4th annual Sibling Conference on February 21. The aim behindthis initiative is that the siblings should know what is happening in the livesof our Friends. It is also an opportunity for the siblings to get connectedwith the organization. The bonding will make it easier for the siblings to stayconnected after their parents are no more. Besides, when the sibling sees faceto face the happiness on the faces of their brother or sister, he/she feelsgood about their parents’ decision regarding rehabilitation.
Duringthe conference, the siblings get an opportunity to interact with all ourFriends and with other siblings also. This time the siblings performed a skitand organized a few games for our Friends. An offshoot of the event is that afew siblings have already started closely working with us. We hope they will beready to undertake bigger responsibilities at Navkshitij in the future.
