A few traditions that bring so much happiness
THE new year brought lots of positivity at Navkshitij. We started the year with the birthday celebrationsof seven Friends. Oncea month, we have a combined birthday celebrationfor all special friends born in thatmonth. This is a tradition at Navkshitij. There is lots of fun and excitement. My colleagues lovingly organise this monthly party. Parents sponsor the snacks and cake. Every month, themenu for the party is special and different.Of course, party time, includes music and dance too.
On January 8, there was a Dosaand Uttappaparty sponsored by Resident Friend Sudha’s cousin Mr. Krishnamurthy. It felt nice to sit in the garden and enjoy fresh, hot south Indian food.
We celebrated Makar Sankrant on January 14, with the usual fervour and enthusiasm. Friends at both units had the traditional sweets Gul poliand Tilgul Wadi.
For this month’s Sports Day, held on January 23, we had different games. It was a day filledwith funand joy. Facility Manager Mahendra Suryavanshi and Caregiver Co-ordinator for Women,Asha Tai,planned games for the gents and ladies staff respectively. Games for Friends were planned and conducted by the Workshop staff. The dayended with delicious snacks, music, and dance. Participating in aSports Day every month reinforces the feeling of camaraderie amongstthe staff and Friends.
This time, for the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, we invited Assistant Police Inspector Prema Patilas our chief guest. Mrs Patil is the recipient of the Mrs. Universe 2019 Bravery title and is also the reigning Mrs. India 2019. Our Friends were thrilled to have a police officer as the chief guest. Since we conduct the Traffic Awareness programme, with help from the local traffic police, every month, ourFriendslove interacting with police personnel. They have a special connection with the police. Our Friends presented a skit, a dance, and a song for the benefit of Mrs. Patil, who was thrilled to watch their performance. We found Mrs. Patil to be a very humble and lovely human being. It was a memorable Day for all of us.
On January 29, Navkshitij gardener Gajanan Kokate celebrated his son Pranav’s birthday. He invited all the staff members, their children, and special friends. Around 100 people attendedthe party. At Navkshitij, all staff members celebrate their children’s birthday with all the other staff members, their children, and all Friends. It makes me happyto seehow they include special friends in all the activities, and our Friends too enjoy this attention and love. It gives them such a sense of belonging. Take care and be safe.*
When special friends give back unconditional love
I have been working as an office assistant in Navkshitij for a year and a half. My experience at Navkshitij is so beautiful that it is difficult to describe in words. Basically, I am an engineer. I didn't know what mental retardation was until I finished college. I have never had experience interacting with mentally challengedbefore. But since I came to Navkshitij, I realiseI love working here.
Whenever I come to the institute in the morning, all the special friends greet me saying, "Good morning, Tai! You are looking beautiful.” Every day they say something good.
Every day, I have been learning something new like what is unconditional love, expressing opinions without fear, taking care of each other, not having worries or tension, and always wearinga smile on the face.
There are lots of examples. But I would like to mention the example of the unconditional love of the special friends towards my daughter Priyanshi. She is so involved with them that she doesn't like to be away from them. They play with her and care for her. Friend Chaitanya Mhetre helps me with the office work. He handles Priyanshi very well. Priyanshi loves to play with him verymuch that she even doesn't want to go home. Whenever she enters the campus, happiness blooms on her face.
I really enjoy working here. Thank you, Dr. Neelima Desai, for giving me an opportunity to work here and for the priceless experience.
