Voice of Navkshitij: May 2018
From the President’s desk
Mangos, berries, puris...a relaxed month
MAY was a slow, relaxed month at Navkshitij, with Friends from the Day School, Workshop and the Autism unit away on summer holidays. Many Friends from the residential also went home, though it is not a mandatory vacation. The parents wanted their wards to come home and spend time with the families.
May and mango go-hand-in-hand and so it was the month of mangoes at Navkshitij too. We had Aamras with puri twice during the month. Our Friends were delighted to partake of thisdelicious combination. Well-wishers Gajanan Ranade and Neelima Ranade donated fresh deliciousiends from the Day School, Workshop and the Autism unit away on summer holidays. Many Friends from the residential also went home, though it is not a mandatory vacation. The parents wanted their wards to come home and spend time with the families. May and mango go-hand-in-hand and so it was the month of mangoes at Navkshitij too. We had Aamras with puri twice during the month. Our Friends were delighted to partake of this delicious combination. Well-wishers Gajanan Ranade and Neelima Ranade donated fresh delicious Hapus mangoes from their farm in Konkan. We are grateful to them for their generosity. We had ice cream parties twice this month, thanks to a sponsorship by well-wishers A K Senthil Kumar and Mrs Prabha Kumar. Sitting on the cool lawns of Marunji, with the gentle breeze blowing, we enjoyed eating the ice cream.
A few new Friends joined us at Navkshitij in May. The first week at Navkshitij is a challenging time for the new admissions. New place, new routine, new people. It can be very disturbing for the new Friends, as also for some of the current wards. The new Friends usually settle down in about a week’s time, when they begin to make new friends and get used to a changed routine. The newly introduced activities at the workshop including making natural colours, seed balls, coaster with seeds, and making manure from flower wastes are going well. The products will be ready for sale in the next few months. All our Friends, without exception, enjoy this phase of the activity – the display, appreciation and sale. We conducted the sixth edition of the Course for Caregivers, in partnership with Sadhana Village. There was very good response this time for the course. People from faraway places like locations on the Gujarat border and Latur in Maharashtra attended this course. The feedback was very encouraging.
This month, our friends went for an outing near Bhimashankar, to look for and eat wild berries (Karvand). They enjoyed plucking the wild berries and eating it fresh off the plant. Volunteers from Fiserv accompanied our Friends on this outing. We are grateful to Fiserv for the sustained and wholehearted support.
What a well-wisher says
I salute you. The multifarious efforts that you plan and execute to overcome one of the most challenging tasks that Nature and Life imposes upon us are unparalleled. The deep thoughts that go behind fulfilling the psychological and physiological needs of the special friends, the efforts that you take in building, sustaining and enlarging the organisation and the motivation that you create for the well-wishers who invest their time for the well-being of Navkshitij are superlative! The book is very well presented. May you have all the positive energies working for you!
