Dedicated individuals working for the betterment of special friends

Navkshitij was established in 2007 with the aim of providing a permanent residential home for intellectually disabled (ID) adults. The IDs here are provided with a compassionate environment, taught life skills and given vocational training. All the activities here are designed to infuse confidence and boost the self-esteem of the IDs. The activities also draw out the best of the physical and mental abilities of the IDs.

A walkathon for the IDs was the launching point for Navkshitij. It started as a daycare centre before metamorphosing into a residential home for adult IDs, with separate hostel units for men and women. The IDs here are provided with nutritious, homely food and fun-filled as well as achievement-oriented activities. It’s a typical home away from home, with designated time for prayer, gym, exercise, games and sports, yoga, pranayama, meditation, workshop activities, TV/recreation and meals together.

The aim of Navkshitij is to create a scalable and sustainable solution to a mammoth problem. Navkshitij focusses on creating a range of replicable models and generating professionally trained and certified caregivers and centre heads. Our centre in Asawali, near Satara, now under construction, includes a state-of-the-art training centre. The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has recognised it as a satellite centre. Our two flagship courses for caregivers and centre heads will be jointly certified by Navkshitij and SPPU, which lends huge weight to the courses, especially for employment.

There are four centres of Navkshitij located at Marunji, Talegaon and Somatane, near Pune, and Asawali, near Satara.

Currently, there are 75 IDs living at our various centres, lovingly cared for by a team of 56 staff members and steered by a Board of Trustees with eight members and four Advisory Board members. We have a professional managing trustee, Prof. Smita Shetty, spearheading the movement.
